Puppy Love…
As a Dog Trainer you can be exposed to multiple situations involving dogs.
Purchasing a new puppy or adopting an older puppy or adult dog is a wonderful experience. As most people are aware a pet can provide unconditional emotional support in addition to contributing to our physical well being.
Financial gain is the main motivator for any business. When purchasing a live animal the business you deal with should include in its mission statement a code of ethics as it relates to social responsibility.
At this time of year our sense of humanity is heightened. Our awareness to the needs of other beings increases our emotional sense of compassion and can affect our decisions on what we do. The holiday season can be a vulnerable time.
Please when looking to purchase or adopt take the time to investigate and ask questions about the health of the puppy/dog your considering such as proof of a Veterinarian examination. Contact the Clinic direct, besides a physical examination it should ideally include a “wellness” blood test, fecal test and urinalysis. A good Breeder or Rescue Group will be impressed at your thoroughness and should not be offended or defensive. (*Note: there are numerous outstanding Breeders however there are some that do not do their due diligence)
With the business of breeding and selling of dogs continuously escalating it is unfortunate that their welfare is not a priority to some. Who doesn’t fall in love with an adorable puppy or want to help a dog in need? That’s what some of the “people” in the business count on! Its difficult to walk away from a puppy or a dog who they tell you has had a rough life. If you have the time and finances to make a commitment to “any” dog then you truly are an angel and I commend you. If you don’t then these few steps could help you to make your decision before you make your purchase.
